Backpacks are commonly worn by the kids at school. They are used for carrying books, as well as many other belongings.
In general, outside of a few episodes (such as "Popular Girls"), all of the characters have different colored backpacks, and, with the exception of Jenna Morgan and select background students, the character's backpacks all are identical in style (for example, Arthur's is red with blue highlights, Buster's is orange instead of red, and Brain's backpack is purple with grey highlights).
Backpacks play an important role in a number of episodes, including:
- "Popular Girls" - Francine and Catherine accidentally switch backpacks. In this (and select few others) episode, each of the characters has 100% identical backpacks, both in their green/orange coloring and style.
- "Nerves of Steal" - Buster steals a CyberToy by placing it inside Arthur's backpack.
- "D.W.'s Backpack Mishap" - D.W.'s backpack is misplaced by one with "OM_BLE" written on it.
- "April 9th" - Binky is found guilty of setting off the fire alarm after his backpack is found beneath the fire alarm pull.
- "Feeling Flush" - Arthur and Francine place a bet: whoever uses more water in a week has to carry around the other's backpack for a month.
- "MacFrensky" - Francine sneaks Buster's toy robot into Brain's backpack.
